Project overview

A cross-platform rewards experience was integrated into the UnitedHealthcare app so eligible members could discover activities, earn incentives, and track balances in one place. The experience aligned with UnitedHealthcare Rewards, which allows eligible members to earn up to $1,000 per year by completing daily goals and one-time activities, and surfaces related benefits like UCard® balances inside the app.

Our objective was to deliver a seamless, secure incentives layer that encouraged healthy actions, simplified eligibility and redemption, and scaled to iOS and Android from a single React Native codebase—while partnering effectively with a 60-developer external team. The focus was on accessibility, performance, and plan variability so members could see, earn, and use rewards without leaving the core UHC app. (Program details verified by UHC sources)

Scope of work

Architected and shipped a React Native rewards module inside the UnitedHealthcare app on iOS and Android, unifying activity discovery, progress tracking, eligibility, redemption, and balance views. Integrated securely with rewards ledgers, wellness data sources, and UCard® services, and wrapped the experience with feature flags, analytics, accessibility, and enterprise compliance.

  • Product & architecture leadership: Led solution architecture and feature delivery for the UnitedHealthcare Rewards module; aligned data contracts, eligibility rules, and plan variations across lines of business.
  • React Native UI & flows: Built cross-platform screens for activity discovery, progress tracking, redemption, and balance visibility optimized for high traffic and low latency.
  • API & partner integrations: Orchestrated secure connections to rewards ledgers, wellness data sources, and payout providers; surfaced UCard balances and eligible spend where supported.
  • Engagement services: Implemented in-app prompts and push notifications to promote new activities, streaks, and expiring rewards.

Key deliverables

  • React Native rewards module integrated into the UnitedHealthcare app (iOS & Android)
  • Rewards ledger integration with eligibility, activity ingestion, and redemption workflows (program supports up to $1,000/year per eligible member)
  • UCard® balance surfaces and spend visibility where plan benefits allow
  • Engagement tooling (push + in-app messaging) and privacy-respecting analytics
  • Solution architecture and feature delivery aligned with enterprise standards

Technical challenges

Harmonizing complex plan eligibility and incentives logic across markets; ensuring near-real-time balance updates under load; and keeping a large, multi-company engineering program aligned on standards, privacy, and release cadence. (UHC publicly highlights in-app rewards tracking and engagement emphasis.)

Project outcome

The React Native integration brought UnitedHealthcare Rewards into the UnitedHealthcare app on iOS and Android, streamlining how eligible members discover activities, earn incentives (up to $1,000/year), and view balances (including UCard® where supported)—all in one place.

Public UnitedHealthcare materials report 3x higher app engagement among Rewards participants vs. non-participants; broker data also shows 94% of first-time participants earned a reward and ~70% paired a device, outcomes our in-app eligibility checks, prompts, and simplified redemption flows were designed to support—creating a single, trusted destination for health rewards with clearer journeys and near-real-time balance visibility.
